Catherine Dix’s two bottle sculptures in red stoneware with blue gray painted motifs are a contemporary twist on the traditional forms of pottery. Their rough texture is evocative of the materiality of ancient ceramics, while the forms themselves are influenced by the shapes of modernity. She thinks of her ceramics as an architectural exercise: a game of construction takes place, playing with the proportions and shapes of traditional vessels, in search of the perfect balance. Catherine finds beauty in functional everyday objects, simultaneously celebrating and pushing the boundaries of traditional shapes and media. Her earthenware bottles are transmuted from ordinary functional forms into less practical, sculptural forms: blurring the line between art and craft.
