This cream coloured ceramic cup by Russian designer Maria Tyakina is inspired by the natural gesture of hands joining together to carry water. The elegant curves lend the vessel not only a beautiful sculptural character but also serve a functional purpose: they are shaped to fit perfectly into one’s hand and mouth. Finely crafted using slip-casting and plaster mold technique, the shape of the cups allows them to fit together creating a third form, resembling a vase. The cups exemplify Maria’s approach to creation: the artist seeks to reimagine our relationship to, and perception of, the objects in our daily lives. Maria is a product designer and interior architect based in the Netherlands, whose work navigates the space between art and design and explores how objects mediate our connection to the body.
