Destroyers/Builders is an experimental design studio based in Brussels & Antwerp, founded in 2014 by Dutch designer Linda Freya Tangelder. The studio’s collections draw on architectural forms and materials as well as construction techniques, with each individual piece aspiring to conjure industrial processes on a human scale. In this way, both high and low end materials are ‘revalued, reconsidered and transformed’, whilst ‘finishes by hand’ offer each object an emotional and tactile quality.
Delving once more into architectural heritage, Destroyers/Builders’ Windows of Bo Bardi (2019) derive from the legacy of the Italian-Brazilian brutalist architect Lina Bo Bardi, who designed the celebrated SESC Pompêia cultural centre in Sao Paulo. Renowned as both an impressive and daring architectural feat, Destroyers/Builders took the building’s windows – their organic shapes rupturing the rhythm of the concrete structure – as a starting point for a series of side tables. For Metamorphoses, Destroyers/Builders offer one such piece, crafted in deep red lacquered wood.
