Horn Variations is a furniture series created by the experimental design studio Destroyers/Builders. Founded in 2014 by Dutch designer Linde Freya Tangelder. The studio’s collections draw on architectural forms and materials as well as construction techniques, with each individual piece aspiring to conjure industrial processes on a human scale. In this way, both high- and low-end materials are ‘revalued, reconsidered and transformed’, whilst ‘finishes by hand’ offer each object an emotional and tactile quality.
Like a number of pieces in Destroyers/Builders’ collections, the shapes in Horn Variations (2018) derive from studies of sturdy architectural columns. In their surfaces, though, the designer sought to pay homage to the rich variations of colour found in animal horn – without touching a material that has become a topical issue, despite featuring heavily in the history of furniture-making. In lacquered chipwood and acrylic paint applied in layers, the fake horn effect is achieved in a number of shades. For Metamorphoses, ‘Horn Variations I and II’ are available in white and dark taupe respectively.
