This beautiful handcrafted vase is part of the series of six original ceramic vessels created by Jade Paton exclusively for Metamorphoses. The work is inspired by the forms and colours of ancient pottery, resembling an amphora unearthed at an archeological site. Its angular forms are a contemporary twist on the curves of classical jugs. Jade allows the shape to emerge spontaneously and naturally as she builds a work, both moulding the clay and letting it guide her. This results in an unexpected and otherworldly form, which feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Both sculptural and practical, the work is equally suited to an exhibition and a domestic space. The child of florists in Cape Town, South Africa, Jade grew up working with her hands, assembling bouquets, and building installations. Her ceramics reflect this upbringing: primarily vases, amphorae and other containers that can be used to hold floral arrangements.
