This beautiful handcrafted vase is part of the series of six original ceramic vessels created by Jade Paton exclusively for Metamorphoses. The matte, raw texture of the surface is inspired by the forms and colours of ancient pottery, resembling an amphora just unearthed at an archeological site. However, the vase’s elongated neck and flattened handles give a contemporary twist to a classical shape. Jade allows the shape to emerge spontaneously and naturally from the clay as she builds a work, both moulding the clay and letting it guide her. This results in an unexpected and otherworldly form, which feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Both sculptural and practical, the work is equally suited to an exhibition and a domestic space. The child of florists in Cape Town, South Africa, Jade grew up working with her hands, assembling bouquets, and building installations. Her ceramics reflect this upbringing: primarily vases, amphorae and other containers that can be used to hold floral arrangements.
