Maria Tyakina’s ‘Fold Lamp’ is finely crafted from rust coloured sheet metal into a delicate rounded form. The unique shape was created by hand, by applying just enough body weight to deform the steel without breaking it. Using manual methods instead of conventional mechanical techniques, allows for greater autonomy of the material. The result is a lightweight but strong form: the exterior of the sheet is stretched increasing the tension, while the inside is shortened and thus compressed. These opposing forces, invisible to the human eye, transform a thin and flexible sheet of metal into a balanced form. ‘Fold Lamp’ exemplifies Maria’s approach to creation: navigating between art and design, the artist explores the ways that objects mediate our connection to the body.
