Established in 2013, Handmade Industrials is a Dutch design studio co-founded by Marlies van Putten and Rutger de Regt. With a shared commitment to process-based design, their work is characterized by experimental material investigations, whilst their creative philosophy combines de Regt’s interest in key social questions and van Putten’s knack for poetic expression.
Poetry, then, was a logical departure point for Handmade Industrials’ contribution to the Metamorphoses platform, with their works paying homage to key figures in Greek mythological tradition. A pair of Impose Vessels – this one with blue accents, representing Argos Panoptes, a many-eyed giant; and one in pearly grey, representing Lo, one of Zeus’ mortal lovers – tell an ancient tale of lust and vengeance, as depicted by Ovid himself. The unique character of these one-off pieces comes to life with a degree of chance, via an innovative self-designed manufacturing technique. Notably, the duo’s Impose Vessels are part of various museum collections, including the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Museum and University of Manchester Special Collections.
