Catherine Dix’s exclusive series of seven redstone ware bottles is a contemporary twist on the traditional forms, shapes and functions of pottery. The warm earthy tones and rough texture are evocative of ancient ceramics, while the forms themselves are influenced by the shapes of modernity. There is a lively quality to the vessels, which resemble three dimensional abstractions of birds or other small animals. Catherine thinks of her ceramics as an architectural exercise: a game of construction takes place, flattening and stretching the shapes, or perching the body of the vessel on high legs, in search of the perfect balance. Catherine finds beauty in functional everyday objects, simultaneously celebrating and pushing the boundaries of traditional shapes and media. Her earthenware bottles are transmuted from ordinary functional forms into less practical, sculptural forms: blurring the line between art and craft.
