Aldo Bakker’s ‘Pipe’ reimagines the traditional vessels out of which we pour drinks. Made out of charcoal coloured porcelain with a matte suede-like finish, the surface of the piece is delineated by elegant curves creating seamless movement. Like Aldo’s other pouring vessels, ‘Pipe’ is full of distinct narrative details which push the boundaries between form and function and challenge us to consider our relationship to domestic objects. People expect a jug to have certain qualities: it should be able to pour out whatever is inside, and it should be refillable. By playing with the container, the spout and the handle in his designs, Aldo questions these prototypical characteristics.
This work can be found in several collections including that of the Kunstmuseum Den Haag. ‘Pipe’ was also included in Aldo’s solo exhibition at Looiersgracht 60 in Amsterdam in 2015, titled ‘Containing Content’, which featured his series of jugs. This purchase directly supports Looiersgracht 60's renowned artistic and public programme.
