This beautiful handcrafted vase is part of the series of six original ceramic vessels created by Jade Paton exclusively for Metamorphoses. The work is inspired by the forms and colours of ancient pottery, evoking an amphora unearthed at an archaeological site. However the proportions of the body and neck of the vase are stretched, compressed and distorted, creating a contemporary twist on a traditional form. The rich terracotta glaze brings to mind the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. Jade allows the shape to emerge spontaneously and naturally as she builds a work, both moulding the clay and letting it guide her. This results in an unexpected and otherworldly form, which feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Both sculptural and practical, the work is equally suited to an exhibition and a domestic space. The child of florists in Cape Town, South Africa, Jade grew up working with her hands, assembling bouquets, and building installations. Her ceramics reflect this upbringing: primarily vases, amphorae and other containers that can be used to hold floral arrangements.
