This beautiful handcrafted vase is part of the series of six original ceramic vessels created by Jade Paton exclusively for Metamorphoses. Inspired by the forms and colours of ancient earthenware, the work is glazed in a black shade evocative of obsidian or volcanic ash. Jade allows the shape to emerge spontaneously and naturally as she builds a work, both moulding the clay and letting it guide her. This results in an unexpected and otherworldly form, which feels simultaneously ancient and futuristic. The rounded, bulbous shape of this vase is almost anthropomorphic, and reminiscent of an ancient Venus figurine. Both sculptural and practical, the work is equally suited to an exhibition and a domestic space. The child of florists in Cape Town, South Africa, Jade grew up working with her hands, assembling bouquets, and building installations. Her ceramics reflect this upbringing: primarily vases, amphorae and other containers that can be used to hold floral arrangements.
